Physical Education
At Lidget Green Primary School, the PE curriculum is designed to spark excitement and build confidence in physical activity from an early age. Pupils explore a wide range of sports and movement skills, from traditional games like football and netball to gymnastics, dance, athletics, and even outdoor adventure activities.
The focus is on developing fundamental movement skills, such as coordination, balance, and agility, while encouraging teamwork, resilience, and a positive attitude toward health and fitness. Lessons are active, inclusive, and often cross-curricular, tying in with topics like science or geography to keep learning engaging.
By making physical education fun and varied, children not only improve their physical abilities but also learn vital life skills that support their well-being and personal growth.
Intent
At Lidget Green Primary School, our intent is to provide a high-quality Physical Education (PE) curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and physically demanding activities. We aim to nurture a lifelong love of movement, sport, and physical activity by making PE fun, inclusive, and accessible for every child.
Through our curriculum, we seek to:
- Develop pupils’ fundamental movement skills - agility, balance, and coordination, from the Early Years upward.
- Build confidence, resilience, and teamwork, empowering children to take part in a range of physical activities both in and out of school.
- Promote the importance of health, fitness, and well-being, helping pupils understand how physical activity contributes to a healthy lifestyle.
- Encourage a growth mindset, where children embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, and show perseverance.
- Provide progressive and inclusive opportunities that ensure all pupils, including those with additional needs, can experience success in PE.
Ultimately, our intent is for every pupil to leave Lidget Green with the physical competence, social confidence, and motivation to lead active, healthy lives.
Implementation
PE at Lidget Green is delivered through a carefully planned, broad, and balanced curriculum that provides clear progression of skills from Early Years to Year 6.
- Our curriculum combines the PE Planning framework with teacher-led enhancements to meet the needs of our pupils and community. It ensures coverage of key areas: invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding, athletics, dance, gymnastics, and outdoor adventurous activities (OAA).
- Lessons are sequenced to revisit and build upon key skills year on year, moving from fundamental movement in EYFS to sport-specific techniques and tactical understanding in Key Stage 2.
- We use differentiated tasks, adapted equipment, and varied groupings to ensure that every child, regardless of ability or need, can participate fully and achieve personal success.
- Where possible, PE is linked to other areas of learning for example, exploring body movement and health in science, orienteering in geography, and dance linked to cultural or historical topics.
- In addition to PE lessons, pupils take part in daily active breaks, lunch and after-school sports clubs, intra- and inter-school competitions.
- Teachers receive regular CPD and work alongside specialist coaches to enhance subject knowledge, confidence, and consistency in PE delivery.
Impact
By the time children leave Lidget Green Primary School, they will:
- Demonstrate secure fundamental movement skills and the ability to apply them in a variety of sports and physical activities.
- Show confidence, resilience, and cooperation, understanding the value of teamwork and fair play.
- Understand the importance of regular physical activity and a balanced lifestyle for their physical and mental well-being.
- Have experienced success and enjoyment in PE, building a positive attitude towards sport and exercise.
- Be prepared for the next stage of their physical education, equipped with the skills, knowledge, and motivation to continue participating in active, healthy pursuits.
We measure impact through regular assessment of skill progression, pupil voice, participation rates in clubs and competitions, and teacher observations. Feedback from pupils highlights that PE at Lidget Green is enjoyable, challenging, and inclusive whilst fostering a school-wide culture of activity, health, and well-being.
