Modern Foreign Languages (Spanish)
Intent
At Lidget Green, our intent is to nurture a love of languages and an appreciation of different
cultures within our inclusive school family. Through learning Spanish, we aim to celebrate
diversity and promote understanding, respect and curiosity about the wider world. We want
to inspire confidence and enthusiasm for language learning that will continue into secondary
education and beyond.
Using the Kapow Primary scheme of work, and following the National Curriculum for
Languages, we want pupils to:
- Develop their ability to understand and communicate in another language through
speaking, listening, reading and writing. - Gain an awareness and appreciation of cultural similarities and differences between
the UK and Spanish-speaking countries. - Build strong foundations for future language learning by developing transferable
language-learning skills, such as memorisation, pattern recognition and
pronunciation. - Recognise that learning a language helps them to become open-minded, global
citizens who value diversity and communication. - Understand and respect cultural differences, learning that language connects people
across the globe.
Implementation
Spanish is taught across Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6) using the Kapow Primary Spanish
scheme, which provides a clear progression of skills and knowledge in line with National
Curriculum expectations.
- EYFS and Key Stage 1 pupils are introduced to Spanish informally through songs,
greetings, stories and simple classroom instructions, laying the foundations for future
learning. - Key Stage 2 pupils follow a structured programme of lessons that build upon prior
knowledge, revisiting and extending vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation each
year. - Lessons are designed to be engaging, interactive and accessible to all learners,
using games, songs, role-play and visual resources to support understanding and
enjoyment. - Cultural learning is embedded throughout, encouraging respect and curiosity for
Spanish-speaking communities around the world. - Teachers ensure that all pupils are supported and challenged appropriately, fostering
confidence and celebrating individual progress within a nurturing environment. - Assessment for learning is ongoing, allowing teachers to recognise achievement and
adapt teaching to meet the needs of every child.
Impact
By the end of Year 6, pupils at Lidget Green will:
- Have developed a growing vocabulary and the ability to communicate simple ideas
and opinions in Spanish. - Demonstrate improved confidence in listening to and speaking another language.
- Show an appreciation for other cultures and an understanding of the importance of
language learning in the modern world. - Recognise how learning a language helps us connect with others, broadening their
understanding of the world. - Possess a solid foundation in the key skills of language learning, preparing them well
for the next stage of their education.
Our pupils leave us as curious, respectful and confident learners who see themselves as
part of a multilingual, multicultural world.
